If you are planning a trip to Genoa with your car, you should know that there are some areas that restrict the circulation and access to them for some vehicles known as ZTL (restricted traffic zones). But don't worry! At Parclick, we know the regulations inside out and we are going to explain them in detail about the ZTL in Genoa so that you can enjoy your trip without any complications:
The city of Genoa includes seven ZTLs that are active every day of the year, 24 hours a day, of which only one is open at night. To access these streets, vehicles must first request and obtain a special permit from the municipal authorities to verify that your vehicle meets the access requirements. We'll tell you how to do this later, but first we'll tell you everything you need to know about each ZTL in Genoa and the areas within each of them:
- ZTL Centro Storico: This zone is controlled by automated access points located inside the old town of Genoa. As you can see on the map, the ZTL Centro Storico of Genoa is divided into 5 sectors, but in all of them, the restriction is the same: traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles are prohibited 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
- ZTL Boccadasse is also controlled by automated accesses and the traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles are also prohibited 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
- ZTL Bolzaneto: This zone, which includes only a few streets, is also active 365 days a year 24 hours a day during which unauthorised traffic, circulation and parking of vehicles are prohibited. Only vehicles loading and unloading goods are allowed access from 6:30 to 11:00 hours.
- ZTL Molo: This zone includes only a few streets close to the quay and is active 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Again, traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles is prohibited in the area shown on the map below.
- ZTL Nervi: Like the previous zones, this zone prohibits traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. For this particular zone, special permits are available for members of associations and cooperatives, as well as for parents and pupils of schools located within the ZTL.
- ZTL Rivarolo: This zone is also active 365 days a year, 24 hours a day and prohibits traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles. Here, the hours of free access for vehicles loading and unloading goods are from 07:30 to 11:30.
- ZTL Vernazzola: Active 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, traffic, circulation and parking of unauthorised vehicles are prohibited. Access for vehicles loading and unloading goods is from 07:30 to 11:30, and there are no time limits for unloading.
- ZTL Nocturne: This residential area of Genoa, where some of the places and monuments of interest such as the Spianata di Castelletto and the Albergo dei Poveri are located, is the only area that is active for a few hours during the day. As its name suggests, it is restricted at night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, every day of the year (including public holidays).
Have you already located all the ZTL in Genoa? Perfect! All you need to do now is to apply for a permit to enter with your vehicle. The City Council of Genoa has provided different types of permits to access the ZTL, but not all vehicles are required to obtain authorisation: electric vehicles, vehicles for the transport of persons with reduced mobility, emergency services, armed forces cars, residents, car sharing, doctors and veterinarians on home visits must obtain a special and unique permit that will allow them to circulate freely in these areas. Likewise, hotel guests and car park users can access all ZTLs except the Castelletto ZTL.
You can apply for a permit by the following means:
- Access activation form: ZTL Permit Genoa
- Permit application form for car park customers: ZTL Genoa Permit for Parking Customers
And that's it! Remember that you must process your authorisation before accessing the ZTL. All vehicles that have not received the permit or have not completed the form correctly must park outside the ZTL.
