As is the case in other major Italian cities, in order to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere, there are areas in the city of Rome where vehicle access is restricted. Do you want to know which are the ZTL in Rome and all the details about the current regulations? Read on!
Rome's ZTL (translated as limited traffic zone) prohibits access to certain types of vehicles during specific hours of the day. This ordinance applies to different areas of the city, each with its own set of restrictions.
Firstly, the most restrictive zone is the one comprising the historic centre of Rome, where the main ancient monuments of the Italian capital are located. All private vehicles are permanently banned from entering this zone. Only residents, workers, vehicles transporting persons with reduced mobility and taxis are allowed to enter, so at no time will you be able to enter here with your vehicle.
The other ZTL zones in Rome have restrictions that apply only during certain days or times of the day, and only to certain types of vehicles.
Broadly speaking, Rome's ZTL is made up of three main areas:
Fascia Verde
From Monday to Friday, Euro 0 and Euro 1 petrol vehicles (i.e. pre-1992 petrol vehicles) and Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2 diesel vehicles (i.e. pre-1996 diesel vehicles) may not enter this zone. Weekends and weekday public holidays are exempted from this regulation. Exceptionally, the Municipality of Rome may further limit access to this zone depending on the pollution levels in the city. In such cases, the City Council will decree which types of vehicles will also be included in this restriction on a temporary basis.
Anello Ferroviario
From Monday to Friday, access and circulation in this zone are forbidden to the same vehicles restricted in the Fascia Verde zone, as well as Euro 2 petrol vehicles (i.e. petrol vehicles prior to 1996) and Euro 3 diesel vehicles (i.e. diesel vehicles prior to 2000). Access is also restricted to Euro 0 and Euro 1 mopeds (i.e. pre-1999 motorbikes) with 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines.
Centro Storico
This zone is subdivided into 5 areas, each with a separate timetable, and during which no vehicle or moped other than electric or petrol-powered ones may enter. At the entrances to these streets, drivers will find signs warning them whether the ZTL ordinance is in force or not at that time.
If you drive into one of the areas on the map below and the sign reads "Varco attivo", if you are not driving an electric or hybrid vehicle or moped, you will know that you are not allowed to enter.
