If you have planned a trip to Florence with your car, you should know that there are some areas where the circulation of certain vehicles is restricted. Luckily, we are here to give you all the details on how to drive through the Florence ZTL without fear of fines!
In general, the entire area comprising the historic centre of Florence is defined as a ZTL, i.e. a limited traffic zone to which access, circulation and parking are prohibited to certain vehicles during specific hours, and, in addition, those vehicles that are not affected by this prohibition must pay a municipal tax for each entry they make to this zone during the activation hours.
The ZTL of Florence is made up of 5 sectors separated by the river Arno:
- Sector A delimits the historic centre from the river towards its mouth,
- Sector B covers the wider area,
- Sector G (active only in summer) is on the right bank of the river
- Sectors F and O (where the Boboli Gardens, the Pitti Palace and Porta Romana are located) are on the left side of the river.
In the following map, you will be able to visualize it better:
If you drive on your way to these areas, before entering you will find signs indicating the access to the ZTL of Florence. In addition, these accesses are blocked by automated barriers equipped with number plate readers that register any entry of vehicles into the streets. In this way, the municipality of Florence will be able to recognise each vehicle entering the ZTL and sanction those that do not comply with the regulations.
As of today, all vehicles can access the Florence ZTL by paying a municipal fee of 5€ for each access to the zone, with the exception of Euro 1 petrol vehicles (i.e. pre-1996 petrol vehicles) and Euro 1 and 2 mopeds (i.e. pre-2003 mopeds) which are not allowed under any circumstances. Electric and hybrid vehicles are not subject to any restriction and can therefore enter the streets of the historic centre of Florence without paying the fee.
At what times is the ZTL restriction active in Florence?
- In sectors A, B and O:
- Monday to Friday, from 07:30 to 20:00 (except public holidays).
- Saturdays, from 07:30 to 16:00 (except public holidays)
- From April until the beginning of October, the ZTL will also be active at night:
- Thursdays from 23:00 until 03:00 the following Friday
- on Fridays from 20:00 to the following Saturday at 03:00
- on Saturdays from 16:00 to the following Sunday at 03:00
- In sectors F and G, the ZTL shall only be active from April until the beginning of October at night:
- Thursday to Sunday, from 23:00 to 03:00 the following day.
- Thursday to Sunday, from 23:00 to 03:00 the following day.
Payment of the fee for access to the Florence ZTL is made at the car park: on the day of your arrival, the car park will collect the fee and process your access to the ZTL. They will register the registration number of your vehicle in a list of authorised vehicles that are issued directly to the municipal authorities so that your vehicle will not be penalised. Remember that you must pay the fee every time you enter the ZTL, even if you enter several times on the same day.
In order to help you find out if the car park you have booked is in the ZTL and that, therefore, you will be able to process your vehicle's access to this area, here is a list of our car parks:
